Even the 30–60 minute power bests were a touch lower in 2026 (1-hour best: 304 W → 286 W). If raw fitness explained the faster time, sustained power should have gone up, not down. The most consistent explanation left standing is draft: a stronger paceline doing more of the work at the same output.
Max heart rate ticked up from 178 to 182 bpm — small, but consistent with the ride notes: 2026 closed as a bunch sprint with a strong ~15-rider group holding together the entire day, while 2025's notes describe a harder, more isolated effort. And 2026 did it with more reported headwind exposure, which makes the time gain more impressive, not less.
